- (Nom propre 1) Du latin Charon, issu du grec ancien Χάρων, Khárôn.
- (Nom propre 2) Le nom du satellite est proposé en 1978 par son découvreur James W. Christy en l’honneur de sa femme Charlene. L’existence de l’entité mythologique ne viendra à sa connaissance qu’après, mais le confortera dans son choix. L’appellation est officiellement entérinée le 3 janvier 1986 par l’Union astronomique internationale.

- (Mythologie) Dans la mythologie gréco-latine, passeur des Enfers, fils d’Érèbe (les Ténèbres) et de Nyx (la Nuit), qui a pour rôle de faire passer sur sa barque, moyennant un péage, les ombres errantes des défunts à travers le fleuve Achéron (ou le Styx) vers le séjour des morts.
