The Year of Indigenous Languages

2019 has been declared by UNESCO « Year of Indigenous Languages ». The organisation has decided to direct its social actions on the conservation and the valorization of linguistic diversity. It has set up a reference site to allow actors to commit oneself and expand the exposure for their organized events on indigenous languages. To give some context to this theme, Unesco has published some statistics:

  • 7,000 languages spoken worldwide
  • 370 millions indigenous people in the world
  • 90 countries with indigenous communities
  • 5,000 different indigenous cultures
  • 2,680 languages in danger

The Wiktionary plays a growing role in the defence and conservations of languages. The project hosts and decribes every languages without distinction and save traces left in human history. Many editors record languages not well known in the West and allow them to reach more people, but there is still a lot of work to do.

Here is a list of some editors committed to those languages in the French Wiktionary:

  • Pamputt maps world languages in the Wiktionary by providing a reference source for each one
  • Unsui has created the largest Northern Sámi online dictionary in the Wiktionary
  • Treehill is interested in dead languages not well known (Gaulish, Lepontic…) and contribute on Gallo and West Flemish two languages in danger in France
  • Prieladkozh works on Breton, to save the last Celtic language spoken in France
  • Lyokoï has reorganized Oïl languages and has co-founded the tool Lingua Libre allowing to record every language of the world
  • (do not hesitate to add yourself on the list!  ) — a column by Lyokoï

One-year evolution

Francisco Dans, a developer working for the Wikimedia Foundation, has published on his website the evolutions on different Wikimedia projects in different languages from January 2018 to January 2019. Regarding the different linguistic versions of the Wiktionary, extremely dynamic communities exist on « small » Wiktionaries; for example, there is an active community on the Urdu Wiktionary (a language spoken in Pakistan) : they have multiplied by more than 5 the number of articles reaching more than 29000 articles. Urdu Wiktionary ranks at second place for its growth among all Wikimedia project (regardless of language). Then, there is the Nepalese Wiktionary (+153 %) and the Bengali Wiktionary (+101 %). With an evolution of slightly more than 6% of its number of pages, the French Wiktionary ranks at 31st rank. Comparatively, the largest project, English Wiktionary grow at a rate of more than 9%, ranking at 23rd rank.

At the bottom of the ranking, there is 73 linguistic versions of the Wiktionary, representing almost 50% of all versions, growing at less than 1% and even 14 versions with no entry growth at all for one year. The Chinese Wiktionary with more than one million entries belongs to that second half, it may indicate that their community is at rest.

Among other languages historically spoken in mainland France, there is Catalan (+28 %), Occitan (+19 %), Breton (+4 %), Basque (+0,1 %) and Corsican whose article number has not changed. Among all these projects, the French Wiktionary is the only one that provides detailed statistics on the evolution of different content types each month, not to only rely on the number of pages (that count flexion pages, often generated by scripts) but also different form of content enrichment (with examples, pictures and audio, etc.).

Dictionary of the month

Collective work, Le Dico des Ados, September 2016-, online.

The Dico des Ados is a website hosting word definitions written by and for teenagers, i.e. mainly 8-13 years old. Definitions are preferably simple, with no word requiring other definitions and with appropriate examples. This website has been set up by a teacher — Vivian Epiney — who built educational activities on definition redaction by his students, and wanted to add value to their work and preserve it in the long term. He then set up a website and used MediaWiki, the tool behind the Wiktionary and Wikipedia. He used a pared down graphical design and some nice drawings. After months of completion, the teacher in charge notified Vikidia — Wikipedia for youngsters — of the project existence, and we posted a few messages at that moment. Reciprocal links were created on the pages of both projects to strengthen their synergy, and links to the Wiktionary were automatically added on each page of the Dico des Ados.

This month, I got in contact with the administrator and we have agreed on a phone call. Lyokoï and 3(MG)² (who is administrator on Vikidia) joined us, and we have discussed on the connections between both our projects, community differences and actions we could initiate to attract more readers and more potential editors.

For March, the suggested theme is war.
