Apparenté au gallois tlawd, (« misérable »), d'un proto-celtique *trā-to-, (« traversé puis transi »), participe passé de la racine *tera, (« percer »), d'où dérive le breton talar, (« tarière »)[1].
Mentionné dans le grand dictionnaire français-breton de François Vallée (1931, page 439a) : treut.
