Issu du celtique *t(w)orkos, qui remonte à l’indo-européen *twerḱ- « creuser », duquel proviennent aussi l’avestique 𐬚𐬡𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀, θβərəsa « cochonnet », 𐬚𐬡𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯, θβarəs « fouir ; tailler au couteau » et le grec ancien σάρξ, sárx « chair »^[1].

Apparenté au breton tourcʼh « verrat », au cornique torgh « verrat castré », à l’irlandais torc « sanglier », au gaulois turcos « sanglier ».
