(Siècle à préciser) Composé de stand. Le préfixe ne serait pas la préposition under « sous » mais un descendant du proto-indo-européen *nter- « entre, parmi, près »; donc « se trouver près de ». Comparer undergo, undertake. Son ancêtre en ancien anglais était understanden, alors que « se trouver sous » était un verbe différent, undergestanden.
