Étymologie modifier
- (1839) Du grec ancien ἅλς, als, « sel » (qui donne halo-), et θρίξ, τριχός, thrix, trikhos, « cheveux », avec le suffixe -ite. Nommé ainsi par le minéralogiste, géologue et paléontologue allemand Ernst Friedrich Glocker car ce minéral ressemble à de fins cheveux de sel, lui donnant une apparence fibreuse.

La formule de l’halotrichite est Fe.Mg Al24(SO4).22(H2O) avec plus de fer que de magnésium, sinon il s’agit de pickeringite.
