- Dérivé de father, avec le préfixe step-.
- Avant l’an 800, stepfather / stepmother signifiait celui qui devient le père / la mère d’un orphelin, et stepson / stepdaughter un orphelin qui devient un fils / une fille par le remariage de son parent[1].
