- Du moyen breton auel[1] issu de vieux breton auel, auelou. Le vieux breton est dérivé d'un vieux brittonique *awel, lui-même issu du proto-celtique *awelā (« vent, brise »).
- À comparer avec les mots awel en gallois et awel en cornique (sens identique).
