L'ouvrage An Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language : To which is Prefixed, a Dissertation on the Origin of the Scottish Language, tome 4, par John Jamieson & John Longmuir, Paisley : chez Alexander Gardner, 1879, p. 472, (en ligne) donne pour SWARFF, SWERF, les définitions suivantes:
1 - Stupor, insensibility
2 - A fainting-fit, a swoon
3 - Faintness, dejection of spirit
