Latin and sort key

Hi,

I think it would be better to keep the J for sorting, my two Latin dictionaries separate both I and J. At least, the sorting key should correspond to the title of the page.

Hm by the way, wouldn't it be better to keep Januarius as the main article, and Ianuarius as an alternative spelling ? And I don't think all these alternative spellings exist, at least we should give an example for every of them, otherwise it does not mean anything. - Dakdada (discuter) 18 mai 2007 à 12:11 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. For the Victionarium, we should first know exactly why they use I and V before using it as a base. Maybe distinguishing between classic Latin, medieval Latin, modern(?) Latin could help, and how it is written/pronounced depending on the language (nowadays). It is pronounced differently in French and in English for example...

Anyway you're right, we should discuss this with the other (Wikidémie is the place).

PS : my bot can quite "easily" customize the sort key for a specific language, we just have to agree on how we want to sort. For now, I'll let the bot continue it's task (100 000 words is long to change, but only changing back the Latin words will be faster). - Dakdada (discuter) 18 mai 2007 à 14:18 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been kind of busy. Actually there's not a lot of things to change (except for the last sentence, I hope I didn't change the meaning too much) :

Y a-t-il un standard pour la transcription des mots latin en français ? Si il n'y a pas de standard il faudrait en adopter un. Le problème est que en latin (mais pas en français) les signes "I" et "J" représentent la même lettre - de même que les signes "s" (s rond) et "ſ" (s long) représentent la même lettre (voir S long sur Wikipédia) - et aussi les signes "U" et "V".

Par example le standard du Wiktionnaire en latin est le suivant : on n'utilise pas le signe "J" mais toujours le signe "I" et on utilise le signe "U" pour les phonèmes /u/ et /w/ et le signe "V" pour le phonème /v/ de la prononciation du bas latin et du latin médiéval (donc Ianuarius est une transcription, mais pas Januarius ou Ianvarivs).
