- (début XVIIe siècle) Du grec ancien αἰγίς, aigís (« de peau de chèvre ») → voir aix. Probablement du grec ancien αἴξ, « chèvre », de l’indo-européen *h₂eyǵ-, « chèvre ».
- Le pluriel aegides est emprunté au latin aegides, du grec ancien αἰγῐ́δες.
