The etymology section says 'speakerine' is from the English word 'speakerine'. That is not correct. 'Speakerine' in French is an anglicism. - Jack, I've looked again at wordreference.com, and find that 'speakerine' is offered only as an inflection of French 'speaker', itself labeled 'vieilli, anglicisme'.
- Also, at Google Books, I found the book "Twentieth Century Borrowings fromFrench to English: Their Reception..." (Julia Schultz). (q.v.)
- The following paragraph is from that page:
- "The borrowing speakerine is used to designate a female radio or TV announcer. It also denotes "a television hostess" (OED2). The word may be classified as a back borrowing since the French source was itself coined from English speaker 'announcer' and the feminine suffix -ine (see OED2). The case of speakerine thus serves as an example of one of the few instances where a word re-enters the original donor language in a new form."
