- Du moyen breton geautenn[1], issu du vieux breton guelt, issu du proto-celtique *gʷeltā, déverbal de *gʷel-o- « paître », d’où le vieil irlandais gelid[2].
- À comparer avec les mots gwellt en gallois, gwels en cornique et geilt « pacage » en vieil irlandais.
