Étymologie modifier
- (1640) Avec le suffixe -al, du latin foedus, foederis (« traité, pacte, alliance »), apparait en anglais avec un sens religieux en lien avec l’alliance entre Dieu et les hommes (voir covenant). Le sens politique se généralise à la fin du XVIIIe siècle et la création de l’État fédéral des États-Unis d’Amérique.
